SAMPLES OF APA RESEARCH PAPERS

The American Psychological Association (APA) style is a widely used referencing system for academic papers. In APA style, research papers are typically formatted with four main sections: the title page, abstract, main body, and references. Here is an example of an APA-formatted research paper:

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance. A sample of 100 college students were randomly assigned to either a control group or a sleep-deprived group. The sleep-deprived group was kept awake for 24 hours, while the control group was allowed to sleep normally. Both groups completed a battery of cognitive tests, including measures of attention, memory, and problem-solving ability. The results indicated that sleep deprivation significantly impaired performance on all cognitive measures. These findings suggest that inadequate sleep has negative consequences for cognitive functioning.

The main body of the paper should include an introduction, method, results, and discussion section.

Introduction

Sleep is a vital aspect of human health and well-being. Adequate sleep has been linked to improved cognitive functioning, including memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities (Blair & Walker, 2015). In contrast, sleep deprivation has been shown to impair cognitive performance, leading to deficits in various domains of functioning (Durmer & Dinges, 2005). The present study aims to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance in college students.

Participants

The sample consisted of 100 college students (50 men, 50 women) between the ages of 18 and 22. Participants were recruited from a large public university in the Midwest and were compensated with course credit for their participation.

Procedure

Participants were randomly assigned to either a control group or a sleep-deprived group. The sleep-deprived group was kept awake for 24 hours, while the control group was allowed to sleep normally. Both groups completed a battery of cognitive tests, including measures of attention, memory, and problem-solving ability.

Measures

Attention was assessed using the Digit Span subtest from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS; Wechsler, 1955). Memory was measured using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT; Rey, 1964). Problem-solving ability was assessed using the Tower of Hanoi task (Sarna, 1972).

Results

The results indicated that sleep deprivation significantly impaired performance on all cognitive measures. Specifically, the sleep-deprived group performed worse on the Digit Span, RAVLT, and Tower of Hanoi tasks compared to the control group. These findings suggest that inadequate sleep has negative consequences for cognitive functioning.

Discussion

The present study provides evidence that sleep deprivation impairs cognitive performance in college students. These findings are consistent with previous research and highlight the importance of adequate sleep for optimal cognitive functioning. Future research should investigate the potential mechanisms underlying the relationship between sleep and cognition, as well as the potential consequences of chronic sleep deprivation.
